General Discussion / Re: 2% milk $3.39

We buy fat free half & half from Shaw's for our coffee at home and 1% milk for our cereal. I think Land o Lakes makes the fat free half & half, but there maybe other brands.

Current News & Events / Re: DSL Problems With Fairpoint
« on: February 06, 2009, 09:46:35 AM »
I had the Comcast guy on the phone for quite a while last night. I went up and got my Fairpoint phone bill and described the exact phone options that I get from Fairpoint, including the Freedom Plan. According to Comcast, their phone portion of the bundled package has the same options, and then some of what I am getting from Fairpoint.

As a Comcast cable customer, I got a call from Comcast as well last night, offering a bundled package. While it's not a knee jerk reaction to what has been going on recently with the Verizon/Fairpoint conversion issues, I am also considering switching to Comcast, from an economic standpoint. I understand that not everyone in Fairfax has high speed internet access, but for those that do, I would appreciate any input from any of you who have Comcast for phone, internet and cable. Curious if there have been any major service or performance issues with Comcast versus Verizon/Fairpoint. I would like to understand if by saving approximately $30.00 per month by going with a bundled package, if I am giving anything up in the process.

Thanks,

Kevin

Yesterday's paper was in our blue chute when we got home last night. This morning, we got another copy of yesterday's paper.

Just curious if All Cycle picks up Christmas trees as part of their weekly trash pick up here in town. I thought I remembered that they do, but charge extra. Do you have to call ahead of time, or do they just pick it up and bill you? Is there a time limit that they will accept trees?

Thanks.

Georgia Market is at the end of Route 104A, heading south on Route 7. We do get their weekly sales flyer in the mail, and they do seem to have good prices. I've stopped in there a couple of times, and they seemed to have a decent variety there.

Current News & Events / Awareness of local fund raising activity
« on: December 21, 2008, 12:11:40 PM »
My wife & I are fairly new to town. This year we will be celebrating our 2nd Christmas here in Fairfax. Looking outside at the snow falling, with no projected warm weather over the next few days, it looks like we will definitely have a white Christmas!

When our son was growing up, we were always very supportive of local fund raising activities, whether it was a little league bottle drive, Girl Scout cookies or Boy Scouts selling popcorn. We were aware of those activities in our community as our son was a member of Cub Scouts and little league. It seemed like we were well connected with local groups, and their fund raising activities. It seemed like our son was always bringing things home from school, letting us know of different events going on in town.

Since our son is grown and off on his own, we don't have the same connection with school, therefore, we don't get the same visibility to fund raising activities.

I do try to read the Fairfax News, although sometime it is gone by the time I get to the store. I also keep current with the Forum here, which is a wealth of information.

I got to thinking about this as I was looking for snacks to have while watching football this afternoon. I found a near empty container of Trail's End popcorn, which we had purchased a couple of years ago from a former co-worker. Her son was in scouts, and was selling popcorn, and Trail's End was one of our favorites. Since it is just the 2 of us, it takes a while to go through popcorn. -;)

Earlier this year, my wife & I intended on buying plants at the little league plant sale. When we got there, we saw signs up along the outfield, identifying plant types reseved for pre-orders.  I know that there were some plants available for those who didn't pre-order, but it didn't have the right number and type of plants that we were interested in. We wound up getting our plants next door, at J&L, so we still bought local. We weren't aware that you were supposed to pre-order plants, as we don't have anyone in little league.

Sorry for rambling, but I am just looking at another way of supporting the local community. There are children in our neighborhood, but I assume that none of them are in scouts or little league.

Thanks!

Current News & Events / Re: Gas Prices In New Hampshire Vs Vermont
« on: November 14, 2008, 03:48:45 PM »
Dick, given the distance, it sounds like Kankakee is probably not in DuPage county, and the tax rate might be different there. We lived in the Chicago area about 15 years ago, in Lake County. The border for Cook County was just down the street from us. It wasn't uncommon to see taxi and limousine drivers filling up at one of the local Lake County gas stations after dropping off their fare in Lake County, before heading back to Cook County. Cook County had a much higher tax on fuel than Lake County at the time.

Current News & Events / Re: Would You Stand In Line 3 Hours To Vote??
« on: November 03, 2008, 01:24:15 PM »
Many candidates have been successful in getting people registered to vote - even those who could have, but chose not to for years. We all hear of voter apathy - 'why bother to vote, my one vote isn't going to make any difference'. In many cases, people aren't voting FOR someone, they are casting their vote against someone. People listen to the polls, and even before the election, candidates are projected to be the winner in a given state. It may come down to our upbringing of wanting to win. Whether you play bingo, or tennis, or baseball, you want to win or be on the winning team. If the polls predict that the candidate that you support has little chance of winning, there maybe little incentive in going to vote.

Why now? A lot of people want to see change.

Political Issues/Comments / Re: Symington endorsement from Southern VT
« on: November 02, 2008, 05:44:32 PM »
It appears that Gaye Symington has captured votes from at least 2 undecided voters, J_Gluck and Joyce Marcel. She might be successful in capturing more undecided voters if she was willing to fully disclose her joint 2007 income, as both Anthony Pollina and Jim Douglas have. Vermonters have a right to understand the amount and sources of income in the Symington household. By selectively disclosing her personal income, and not including her husband's income, it gives the appearance that she is hiding something.

I didn't see this group, but I've seen similar groups a couple of years ago, in southern Vermont. We were heading from Ludlow to Weston, and came across a group doing the same thing. I assume that they were part of a cross country ski team, practicing for the upcoming ski season. Looking at the recent edition of Vermont Sports, there are a number of cross country ski races scheduled this coming winter, both in Vermont as well as in Quebec.

I'm with you, only I went to bed at the end of the 5th inning, and the Red Sox down 5-0. I think at the time that Kazmir had a fairly low pitch count, and the Sox offense was essentially non-existant. I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I heard they had come back and won. Now it's back to Tampa Bay tomorrow. Let's hope that Beckett has a much better outing than his last game. At least the bull pen should be rested, with today being an off day.

Mike,

Congratulations on your team advancing to the ALCS. It is exciting anytime that your favorite team gets into post season play. That being said, playing baseball in October is a lot different than during the regular season. I give Tampa Bay all the credit for their overall winning record during the regular season, including their record against Boston. As The Angels just found out, once the regular season is over, all of those statistics have no bearing on what happens during the playoffs.

Tampa Bay does have a good team, but the Red Sox have far more depth. If you look at players like Pedroia, who has MVP numbers, and a very steady hitter; his batting was virtually non-existant during the ALDS. Look at who hit the walk off hit last night to end the game - Lowrie, who has played very well for an iinjured Lugo. I could go on and on, but I am excited about the Red Sox ability to move past Tampa Bay. With the intensity that these 2 teams have played in the past, it should be an excellent series.
