Current News & Events / Re: Smuggs Was Closed Again For A While
« on: October 24, 2007, 10:23:52 AM »
There was another rock slide last night in the same spot where the rock fall was the other day. Vermont State Police were just setting up flares last night when I was headed back through the notch last night around 10:30pm. I checked the VT Agency of Transportation website this morning before heading into work this morning. One lane was closed but the road was passable. It was mostly cleaned up by the time I drove through at 9:30am.

Vermont 108: from State Route 100 to State Route 15
rock fall, obstruction on roadway — until today at about 12:00 PM
Comment: Rte 108 thru Smugglers Notch is down to 1 lane for the next several hours while road crews clean up a rock slide. Please use CAUTION while traversing the Notch.

Current News & Events / Re: Costco Gas Station In Winooski
« on: October 23, 2007, 11:15:51 AM »
Just another reason to enjoy being a Costco member. I know people who buy gas from Costco in other states and it is always a little bit less expensive than non-Costco stations.

As you mentioned, no permits are in place. Being that this is Vermont, I am sure this is far from being a done deal, but as a frequent Costco shopper, I hope both the gas station and the store expansion become reality.

I didn't notice any snow yet on Mount Mansfield, but that can only spell a longer commute to work for me in the near future as the Notch will close soon.

Temperatures in the 20s means I will have to turn up the heat a level on the pellet stove to keep the family warm. I will be burning 24x7 before I know it.

By the way the road was opened again shortly after noon.

I work in Stowe and commute over the notch every working day its open and I have seen several tractor trailers stuck in the notch, including some in the process of getting stuck.

Today's trailer was the most stuck I personally had ever seen. The trucks always have trouble at the very top of the notch where there is a little S turn with rocks jutting out from both sides, but they can usually make it through there with only a couple of bent rims and torn tires as they suffer the embarrassment of traffic waiting to pass in front and behind. You can almost feel the heat off the embarrassed driver's face as they decide to just gun it over the rocks. The driver thinks they've made it until they make their way down to the nearly 180-degree hairpin turn to the right on the Stowe side. The driver will usually attempt one or two times before backing up and pulling off to the side to let traffic pass. Today's driver didn's seem to give up until the trailler was pinned up against the rocks to the right with the cab appearing about jacknifed. He was really stuck and had the bent rims to show for problematic S-turn navigation. I was forced to turn around at the hairpin and go back up and over the mountain and through Morrisville to get to work. It made me about an hour late.

With my extended commute to Stowe, I began thinking about why truck drivers continue to try to drive through the notch. I believe it is because the signs only say "Tractor Trailers Prohibited" or "Not a Through Route for Tractor Trailers". Maybe the State of Vermont needs to spell it out more clearly with a sign that says "IF YOU'RE IN A TRACTOR TRAILER, YOU AIN'T GETTIN' THROUGH!" Maybe some pictures of previous attempts would help too.

Current News & Events / Re: I Have The Worst Time With This New Math

According to Google, you are still correct.

You can type: 1/2 gallon in Quarts and it will display (1/2) US gallon = 2 US quarts

So my question is if the box of ice cream actually claims to be a half gallon or is it just your everyday 1.75 Qts container?

Have you ever played with Google Calendar? It is pretty easy to use and an Events Calendar could be shared easily with other that use Google Calendar.

Thanks for the post Henry. Both of my children were Baptized in that font and it is great to put a face to the plaque.

Happy Birthday to Imogene!
