Current News & Events / Re: Garbage pick-up

I'm having good luck with Duffy's (and always have had to take my trash to the end of the private road for pick-up).
Hope things improve for those of you that are experiencing problems.

Layoffs are always a shock, but we've got some good news out there too - Mylan’s expanding, IBM and Husky are hiring, Homeland Security is recruiting, Northwestern Medical Center is looking and, I guess we'll see how this one goes, Wal-Mart’s broken ground.

So the victors prevailed despite efforts of a very powerful lobby.  Per the Vt Alliance for Ethical Healthcare (yes, I get it, everyone who disagrees w/you favors unethical healthcare):

Team A:    Patient Choices at the End of Life – Vt & Vt Psychiatric Association.
Team B:    Vt Medical Society, Vt State Nurses Association, Vt Organization of Nurse Leaders, Vt Center for Independent Living, Vt Coalition for Disability Rights, Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington, Vt Ecumenical
Society & Vt Right to Life.

A:  An adult, competent, patient who has received palliative care and hospice referrals, been adjudged terminal and non-depressed, has the choice to request, as witnessed by a variety of non-family and non-involved adults, a physician to write a prescription for medication that the patient may self-administer after a mandatory waiting period in order to die sooner than the doctor expected.  Doctor may refuse & transfer patient.

B:   Doesn’t matter how intelligent, educated, informed, and well-adjusted you are, how many safeguards, checks and double checks you propose, we know what's best for you.

(Public radio broadcasts the BBC early in the morning, including fairly regular coverage of Kenya. Reconciling distant memories of the beauty of its people and and stark terrain with this century's turmoil is difficult - likely why I am posting on Vtgrandpa in the middle of the day rather than keeping to task! Politics in Kenya is rough stuff. Bloodshed surrounding the 2007 elections has been horrific. Yesterday’s coverage included updates on politicians facing charges in the International Criminal Court in the Hague for crimes against humanity.  Allegations include those against the deputy prime minister, former ministers and ex-police chief of being responsible for orchestrating the widespread violence.  Charges seem to focus on 1,2000+ civilian deaths with more than 500,000 people fleeing their homes in the violence. The accused have publically denied direct links the murders, forcing people from their homes, rape and persecution. )

Mr. Clark: Thank you for approaching the issue conservatively. It safeguards both your students and the Town.  Well done.

What was the court settlement payment? $2.3 million is a large number.

I was told they are "Asian Lady Beetles, aka Japanese Ladybugs" and to be sure I should gather a few, count their spots to see if they had about 19 and then crush them to see if they gave off a bad smell -- you have to love the bug folks!  I'll have to keep this one in mind for the next visit of the grand-nephews...

How are our reps feeling about extending the sales tax to services? I'm worried about double taxation, further complication of the tax code and small service businesses. Currently, when Joe is paid $2500 for plowing a private road and driveways in a neighborhood, he pays income and self employment taxes on the $2500. He's a responsible guy, reports all income and doesn't make up expenses so he pays $140 in income taxes on this transaction plus all self-employment taxes.  Under the new proposal, he has to get a tax license and collect, report and remit 4.5% sales tax for some of his plowing and clearly document any plowing that's exempt. The proposal only applies to consumer-purchased services, likely those totalling $600 annually. Joe, who is personally liable for paying taxes and penalties for any taxes that he should have collected but didn't (and for collecting taxes when he shouldn't) must figure out who gets taxed and clearly document each taxed and exempt transaction. Each homeowner in a 4-house neighborhood pays $625, that's taxable; each person in a 6-person neighborhood pays him $416, that's not taxed; Robin's Realty Management, Inc. pays him $10,000 to plow for condos/apartments it manages, that's not taxed; Robin pays him $625 over the winter to plow out herself and her parents, that's taxed.  I thought we were trying to simplify things....

Thank you 3 & it does look like a busy night. (Think the top post listed the 1/5/11 date as the date of warning versus the meeting.)

Was this rescheduled because of the Martin Luther King Day?

General Discussion / Re: Land Trust?
« on: November 18, 2010, 06:12:59 PM »
There are so many property, estate, transfer tax, gift tax and/or income tax consequences to anything you do with land and the rules change so often, who can tell with certainty what they will be tommorrow. And remember choosing to permanently sell/donate development rights to the Vermont Land Trust (set up as a non-profit organization) is a lot different than choosing to enroll land in the State of Vermont's Current Use program.   Hmmm, Ed, lots of people elect to homestead a house & 2 acres to get a tax break - think a public access requirement on this tax break could get a little dicey! A little courtesy and respect for one another will go a long way to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the land.

Josh:

Short answer: Property owners who sell conservation rights to the land trust do not need to allow any public access - for hunting or otherwise - although many choose to or even include public access language in the easement conveyed.

You may want to check out the Vermont Land Trust's web site.

Current News & Events / Re: Four Wheeler Stolen In Fairfax
« on: September 04, 2010, 11:22:56 AM »
Vermont's DMV website has a "readable" guide regarding ATVs, including registration, titling, equipment and operating and age requirements.  http://dmv.vermont.gov/publications.  With a couple of exceptions, an ATV must be registered to be operated anywhere except on land owned by its owner and ATVs with a model year of 2004 or after must be titled.

Perhaps some of the problems that arise, including accidents involving children, unauthorized use, damages and even theft could be alleviated if it were followed a bit.

Don't these things have VIN numbers? Thought anyone who drove them off of their own property needed a registration & plates and had to register the VIN through DMV.
