Current News & Events / SCAM?
« on: September 03, 2015, 08:17:30 PM »
Around 8:30pm I received an anonymous call from a heavily accented male claiming he was  "tech support" regarding microsoft and there were some issues that needed to be fixed. He gave me some info about where/when I'd purchased my computer to make himself sound plausible. I knew he was going to suggest he access my computer remotely, which I wasn't going to allow, but I wanted to see where he was going. I pushed him hard to tell me what he wanted and he wouldn't give me a straight answer and I kept saying get to the point, what is it we need to do, to fix this so called problem? He walked through opening some menu of microsoft applications, some were running, some were stopped and told me that was the problem. It sounded like BS. and he kept carrying on in stilted English, ma'am this, ma'am that. I told him he wasn't going to access my computer and he just carried on with whatever he was saying about wanting to help me. He asked me to open a browser, so I did and put in a web address, (http://lmi1.com/ so I did and a screen came up   asking for a code and had a download button, I told him I didn't have a code, so he gave me one.

I have decent security on my computer, so I wasn't worried about finding out what this was about and sure enough, as soon as I entered the code, there was an alert not to go further unless I knew/trusted the person trying to access my computer. I said, you're trying to access my computer, I don't know who you are, we're done. I hung up and he was still carrying on about his legitimacy. The site that comes up is https://secure.logmeinrescue.com/Customer/Code.aspx. I think it's legit, but not the person calling me. There are any number of people out there who would fall for a scam like that and be hacked, because he did have some accurate info and I did stop and think for a minute. It's entirely possible if he hadn't been such a hack himself, I possibly could have been persuaded.  :/

Due to our short term memory loss on all things that didn't happen 5 minutes ago, I thought I would post this journal article from about 2007 for those who may think all this healthcare crap is new. It's not. Just a new sheriff in town directing traffic. What is new are the federal mandates. And since most people are on the "throw it all in the obamacare pot" train blaming everything from a toe fungus they had 8 years ago to dinner burning last night on Obamacare.(I am neither for nor against the affordable care act at this point, I am just humored by the blame it receives for all things)

I want to ask a serious, genuine question:  For those of you who feel your insurance coverage is now worse because of Obamacare (the affordable care act), what was so good about it before that was destroyed by this law? Has it really been affected or do you just think it has been? This law only was in effect this year, so if your insurance coverage hasn't changed much in several years, ACA can't be blamed.

I'm just trying to get people to think about things a little. I have heard the most ridiculous comments from people everywhere that  indicates few really has a clue or even want one. There are plenty of issues with this thing that could be fixed, however unless people know what they're talking about they can't even have a discussion.
As for the non-affordable, "affordable" premiums being offered: I have concluded that  what we're seeing is the full amount that we never see since employers usually pick up a large percentage of the premium cost. They also likely get discounts--it's unknown/unclear if these are discounted rates. I think if you compare the coverage etc to your own employer backed policies, you will find they're all just as crappy--except maybe for the the most expensive (if you have a choice of policies)

Can the average person afford a high deductible policy that isn't subsidized by an employer or the government? Clearly not. But is it the cause of everything bad happening? Not likely. If a republican gov could work with a democrat legislature to work out a reform in state health care they could all live with, then it seems like the yahoos in Washington should be able to do the same thing, in reverse order. What we had before the feds got involved, worked for those it needed to work for. It may not have been perfect or agreeable to some, but it was a compromise.

Political Issues/Comments / Stop Oil Speculation
« on: March 06, 2012, 03:19:49 PM »
Below is a news-blip from Sen. Sanders re: the high price of gas and what a few members of congress (very few) are attempting to do about it. This is very telling about where our elected officials stand on this matter (I think), when there are hundreds of members in the total congress and only a very small handful are willing to stand up to the giants for the American people? What's wrong with this picture? 23/100 senators  that's not even 25% and 47 representatives out 435 that's barely 11%! Hmm, less than 13% of our congressional leaders support curbing speculation on crude oil. What does this really say about  our elected officials in D.C. ???

Since higher gas prices drives up the cost of all goods and services, it seems clear by lack of support that our government wants for us all to struggle with the cost of living. Unless I'm viewing this all wrong, I don't understand why the entire congress can't/shouldn't get behind this sort of thing? I'd like to know which 69 members have a conscience. Some here may complain about Bernie, but no one can ever say he doesn't try to do what's right for people.

Sen. Bernie Sanders and 69 other members of Congress say federal regulators should curb speculation in crude oil markets which has artificially pushed up gasoline prices to nearly $4 a gallon. The lawmakers - 23 senators and 47 members of the House - said Monday in a letter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission that the regulators must stop Wall Street futures traders from dominating the oil market.  The commission has flouted a provision in the 2010 Wall Street reform law that required regulators to put tough new trading limits in place by Jan. 17, 2011. "We are disappointed that, more than a year later, the commission has not fulfilled this important regulatory duty," the letter said.

"It is one of your primary duties - indeed, perhaps your most important - to ensure that the prices Americans pay for gasoline and heating oil are fair, and that the markets ... operate free from fraud, abuse, and manipulation," the lawmakers added.

They stressed that gasoline pump prices are up despite high supplies and low demand. According to the Energy Information Administration, the supply of oil and gasoline is greater today than it was three years ago, when the national average price for a gallon of gasoline was just $1.90. Today, the national average is more than $3.70 a gallon at a time when the demand for oil in the U.S. is at its lowest level since April of 1997.

There is a growing consensus that speculators are to blame. Exxon Mobil, the Saudi Arabian government, the American Trucking Association, Delta Airlines, the Petroleum Marketers Association of America and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis all say excessive oil speculation significantly increases oil and gasoline prices. Citing a recent report from the investment bank Goldman Sachs, a Feb. 27, 2012, article in Forbes said excessive oil speculation adds $.56 to the price of  a gallon of gas.

"As the cost for American people to fill their gas tanks continues to skyrocket, the CFTC continues to drag its feet on imposing strict speculation limits to eliminate, prevent, or diminish excessive oil speculation," the members of Congress told the commissioners.

"We urge you to take immediate action to impose strong and meaningful position limits, and to utilize all authorities available to you to make sure that the price of oil and gasoline reflects the fundamentals of supply and demand."

Political Issues/Comments / Interesting Points Made By Bernie Sanders
« on: December 07, 2010, 10:19:26 AM »

I know he's not favored by the majority of my right wing pals here, but I happen to think Bernie Sanders has his heart in the right place in most situations as far as politicians go. In the following Youtube video he's giving an impassioned speech to the president about what he believes is an injustice to the American people.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5OtB298fHY&feature=player_embedded#

I think this was before the senate vote on the tax cuts. Personally, I am really disgusted that the republicans in congress so willingly stand up and talk out of both sides of their mouth about money. I am equally disgusted that we have such a weak president unwilling to stand up to their ridiculous demands. He should have  listened to Shumer--I think that's who it was, and  agreed to compromise on the millionaires  and up, but he's a wuss! You can't trust a bully and you can't trust a wuss. That leaves us pretty much screwed.

I'm sorry guys--Ed (dba Rod) Thor, Chris, Josh, Ron et-al, but if you're in agreement with the GOP on this one that the Bush tax cuts need to be extended for the good of the economy--(because  trickle down economics has worked so well)--I will tell you you're nuts, but not before  asking you to explain your rationale and cite sources! :D

Current News & Events / Is It a Real or Made Up Controversy?
« on: March 17, 2010, 01:08:23 PM »
www.njbiz.com/article-multiple/80862-report-middle-class-suffers-brunt-of-health-insurance-crisis

I admit that I am confused over the controversy regarding HCR, so I have to ask is it a real controversy with the public or a made up one? Is it really THAT difficult to get accurate information in this country?  It's pretty scary to read an alleged new article and question whether  the information is accurate or slanted to reflect the bias of a particular political agenda!!

The above referenced article states 40+% of the middle class have lost their insurance since the turn of the century and have turned to other means like medicaid out of necessity or have stayed w/o. Is this true, not true, sort of true? I know what I have seen personally happen to certain insurance policies, but I can only speak to what I know, not globally.

The country is really in a sad state at the moment and it has far less to do with the recession or administration than it does with the pervasive media coverage of all things stupid, inflammatory, and just plain TMI! Do we REALLY need to know about Tiger's sexual exploits; the next power play in the Jon & Kate saga or what Rush and other political commentators think? Since the news became nothing more than a continuous stream of sensationalism, it's impossible to get to the bottom line on anything.

On one hand you hear 80 % of people are happy with their insurance and don't want reform on the other you get 80% are in favor of HCR. I'm not a math wiz, but I can do simple addition and I own a calculator. If 80% are for and 80% are against then someone is crunching numbers in their favor, but who?

We shouldn't have to guess!!

So, does anyone know what the answer might actually be? Are the masses actually suffering under the strong hold of the Insurance industry or are people in general content with what they have?

Current News & Events / Big Thanks to the Road Crew
« on: January 04, 2010, 07:09:50 PM »
These guys were out all weekend starting Friday including in the wee hours this morning clearing the roads for the school buses. They do a great job keeping the roads clean. I know we all appreciate what they do, but probably don't think to tell them as often as we should. Thanks for all the long hours you put in guys and for being there when Fairfax Rescue needs you too!

Apparently this has been in the local press recently and also made national headlines in the Boston Globe a few days back. This is an excerpt taken from a Facebook page, I have included the link at the end. Facebook users are joining this page and many people have sent emails to  the COO of the company that manufactures Montster Energy Drink to tell him to leave this  small business alone. It doesn't make a lot of sense why this huge corporation would pick on such a small company that doesn't even have a national brand. I see this as a David & Goliath kind of thing. I don't know much about trademark laws, but it just seems like this billion dollar company is picking on the wrong people.

"Recently, Monster Energy Drink has told Rock Art Brewery to "cease and desist" their production of Vermontster, a 10% barleywine because they fear that there could be confusion between this beer and their energy drink. The labels bare no resemblance to each other, one is a beer and one is an energy drink. The only similarity is the "Vermonster" vs "monster" part of the name."www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=171894902802&ref=nf     The COO of Hansen Naturals the company that makes the drink is Nick Gagliardi,  his e-mail address is: 'nick.gagliardi@hansens.com' many people from all over are telling him what they think of this, if you have a minute, maybe you could too.

Below is a link to youtube that has a video from  the owner of Rock Art Brewery in Morrisville explaining what is going on with Monster Energy Drink.
This has generated a lot of grassroots support on youtube accross the country and people all along the social networks  are giving it plenty of word-of-mouth. I thought what this person had to say made the most sense: (from the comments on youtube)  "I really do not know what the debate is. Obviously the root word of the name of "Vermontster Beer," is the State of Vermont. The suffix "ster" has been added, like it is added to many other terms, such as hipster, or spinster. It is obvious. The guy brews it in Vermont. It is obvious that monster is not the root term. What other names add a prefix "Ver?" Are we trademarking syllables and word sounds these days?"

We're looking for you if you haven't heard from us yet...so if you've reached this site, leave your name and e-mail. We're planning a big event and want everyone to come this year! So tell us where you are at by leaving your email address.

Looking for Tracie Jenkins, Todd Ronson, and Jeff Norcross to name a few we're unsure of. If you happen to know contact them and tell them it's been 25yrs (in case they've been busy and lost track!)

More details as they develop...

Yes, believe it or not we're coming up on our 25th Class Reunion. It seems like only yesterday we were partying all night in that field near that pond and I was driving the Toyota 4x4 home at sunrise. Yeah, that was back before Toyota gave their truck a name (Tundra is it?). And they only had one, a little one. But I digress...

We're trying to locate some people we haven't seen in these last 24yrs (those who don't live in town or in the state and aren't on Facebook!) So to any of you alumni out there if you happen to know someone from the class of 85 or if you know someone who knows someone who knows a member of that class hook them up with this web site and announce their arrival on the "meet and greet alumni" forum under the Class of 85 25th!

Let's get at that old-fashion social networking!!

THANKS to all who can and are willing to help!  :-)
