General Discussion / Maine Coon Cat?
« on: June 06, 2014, 12:01:14 PM »
Does anyone at the northern end of rte 104 have a Maine coon cat- or another breed of 20+ lb tiger cat) that may have been out yesterday?  Around 10:00 last night we were startled when one was standing on the deck railing and peering in our living room window.  It didn't appear to be aggressive and just walked away when I opened the door to investigate.  I didn't have a problem with it, I'm just curious since I rarely seen wildlife in my yard.

(No, it wasn't a fisher cat)

I have a question that I'm hoping someone could answer- Article 3 of the school meeting ballot asks "Shall the voters of said school district authorize the school directors to borrow money for school expenses in anticipation of revenue for the ensuing year?" What exactly does this mean?  That the school is operating on loans until tax money arrives in November?  The School's fiscal year appears to begin on July 1 so am I correct in thinking that from July 1 until tax money arrives, the school doesn't necessarily have the money to operate if this article is voted down?  Is this a standard practice?  If so I don't think it's a very good method and should be addressed.

Also out of curiosity, the town budget that we voted on for "2014"- Is that the amount to cover the calendar year of 2014?  So the town basically operates without an approved budget from December until town meeting?  If I remember correctly this was brought up by an outside auditing company several years ago and it was suggested that the town's fiscal year be shifted (I think to April 1).

Any thoughts?

Announcements / Anyone have a 12'x12' canopy?
« on: July 06, 2012, 04:33:32 PM »
Does anyone have a 12'x12' slant leg canopy?  I have two side wind screens to gove away if anyone can use them (the two pieces completely enclose one canopy.  They were from a piece of junk Quest canopy I bought at Dick's a few years ago though I suspect they would fit reasonably well on most any 12'x12' slant leg canopy.

This is sort of what they look like: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2633175&lmdn=Brand&cp=4406646.11400507.4418095

Also, if anyone wants my frame for parts, I'll give that away too otherwise it's going in the scrap heap.

Thanks,
Trevor

This is similar to what they were used on: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12595918&lmdn=Brand&cp=4406646.11400507.4418095

General Discussion / Flags
« on: July 03, 2011, 09:18:12 PM »
My american flag has become too tattered to remain in service and I was wondering if anyone knows how I can properly dispose of it.  I thought I remembered a discussion here not too long ago.

Thanks and happy Independence Day!

Reviews / Wood Furnace
« on: April 20, 2011, 09:12:19 PM »
Does anyone have a recommendation for a hot air, wood-burning furnace?  I'm looking to add one to supplement my oil heat.  I've been looking at Vogelzangs and they seem to have pretty good reviews.  Thanks!

Political Issues/Comments / 2 tax questions
« on: March 22, 2011, 09:22:01 PM »
I have two questions, sort of tax related.  Contrary to some earlier posts, I'm actually serious! :)

1) Can anyone tell me approximately how much (percentage) of the state and federal gas tax is directly used for roads/transportation?  I've heard that a majority of it- at least at the state level- just goes into the general fund.  Is this true and if so, why?  That's like taxing fast food, alcohol, or tobacco and not using it to fund health care.  I've always thought that the tax should match the expense...

2) Why is Vermont opposed to toll booths?  I have no problem paying a toll as long as the roads are maintained.  While I'm at it, lets privatize those rest areas and let them earn some income, at least sales tax, for the state!

Thanks,
Trevor

Current News & Events / "Burton to move manufacturing to Austria"
« on: March 16, 2010, 03:10:54 PM »
Yet another company leaving Vermont AND outsourcing from overseas:

http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/article/20100316/NEWS01/100316006/Burton-to-move-manufacturing-to-Austria-43-jobs-leave-Vermont

The article states 43 jobs will be lost, but a co-worker who's spouse works there said they thought it was over 100... Oh well.  Glad to see our country is going in the right direction.

Does anyone know anything about channel 52?  I just rescanned my channels on my tv and it's picking that up now.  It's analog so it must be out of Canada. I don't remember ever seeing it before.

General Discussion / Railroads?
« on: January 26, 2010, 08:59:59 AM »
Does anyone know if there was ever a railroad, or a railroad offshoot, in or through Fairfax?  I have a railroad enthusiast friend that was asking.

No Henry, I'm not writing a book. :)
