This Bookmobile was around town Monday.
RADIO
Dave Moody, current voice of Thunder Road, and host of Sirius Speedway on satillite radio, had a column in the new issue of Speedway Illustrated.
He talked about listening to a NASCAR race on the radio, and it being more exciting than watching it on TV.
He is right. On the radio, they have to be more descriptive of the events as they are happening. Also, on the radio, you are not subjecated to DW's Boogety Boogety crap, nor do you have to deal with FOX's idiot gopher.
His article reminded me of the old days, when not all the races were on TV. Many an afternoon was spent on the lawn, or doing a project with Dad, and the race blaring away on the car radio. The old WKDR, 107AM had ALL the races. The Winston Cup ones, the Martinsville races for the modifieds and late models, hell we even listened to the Daytona 200 race for motorbikes.
You had to envision the race in your mind, according to the call of the race. Crashes, wild finishes, were all deftly described by the likes of Ken Squier, Barney Hall, Eli Gold, and others on the Motor Racing Network, or MRN.
Of course, back in the 70's, I used to listen to the Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics games on WBZ out of Boston after the sun went down. I also used to listen to the New England Whalers of the WHA on WTIC out of Hartford.
And if the Red Sox game wasn't on Channel 22, Mom would listen to the game on the radio. Can't remember what local station had it. Probably picked up the flagship station out of Boston.
Those were the days.

Those were great days Mike, some of my greatest memories are listining to the Expo game out on the front lawn with my dad, late summer nights battling the hated Phillies, or Pirates, good times in a much simpler world

I agree with you, Mike. I spent many nights laying awake at night listening to Johnny Most and Glenn Ordway calling the Celtics games on the radio. At times, if the Celtics were on TV, I would turn the volume on the TV down and listen to the radio broadcast, instead.
