Anyone who loves summer (I do) certainly hasn't had anything to complain about this year--except for that nasty little stretch of high humidity in July...

But like every Vermonter, I'm wondering if there will be a "pay back" this winter for the nice weather.

Why can't we ever just accept a gift of beautiful weather as a gift without wondering if we'll have to pay for with crummy weather at a later date?

What has caused this irrational thought process? Do we actually think mother nature really hate us that much that she can't just offer up a string of lovely days without punishment?

I don't know about anyone else, but I have had more than one weather conversation where either myself or the other person makes the statement about getting the payback in the winter.

Any thoughts on this peculiar phenomenon? Any of you folks from another state ever experience this elsewhere or is it one of those things that's native to this state? :-)

mirjo   From what I've observed , most of the guilt associated with this weather phenomena usually comes from warnings being passed on by well-meaning  Methodists . When I was growing up in Central Vermont , my church-going adult friends never overlooked a chance to warn about dire consequences if one got too much enjoyment in life........probably it's the same reaction all over New England , especially when a storm follows up a nice stretch of sunshine & clear skies !!! Until that time , enjoy what you have.....I try to !!!

Hmm... I've never heard of weather anomolies being associated with and organized religion :) Interesting!

Rev Elizabeth, any thoughts on that? LOL

:D

I thought it was the Catholics who cornered the guilt market! :D I've never considered this particular phenomenon of human weather-conversation nature a product of organized religion either, but it is an interesting concept.

Doubt Pastor Liz would agree about the Methodists or the Catholics or any Christian based faith for that matter.

Who shall we pin it on???

What's with the guilt/religion connections anyway? It's pervasive!!! ;-) Since I tend to start controversial trouble, I'm going to close that thought with this one:

Let's enjoy the sun and not go there! :-)

Hell hath no fury like a discussion on religion. Henry's web site would surely crash (and burn)

;-)

This morning I stopped into a drycleaning establishment in Glen Ellyn , to pick up some items for my son's family , and lo & behold, the manager brought up the subject of the great weather they're having in Illinois now, then ended with " but we'll probably pay for it later "...So, that particular New England pessimism has passed on to another generation........but I forgot to ask if he was a Methodist   ( so much for that theory ! ) .

This I find fascinating. Maybe it's a northern connection, something to do with errant weather patterns that most northern states experience? Not being able to count on the weather report to be accurate. It does seem that a string of nice days together warrants something unpleasant to follow it.

Then again, there is that upbringing that warned to not be too boastful/prideful etc., and what does a beautiful sunny day virtually shout out at the world? Look at me and how wonderful I am! It's all connected,we're all connected. If we (as a planet) ever take five minutes to realize it, world peace would likely just happen. ;-)

This is a day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it the psalmist writes........and notice, there is no reference to the KIND of day it is, just that it is another day!!!!!

I for one, have had enough of this hot weather.  If I liked this sort of climate, I would never have left Maryland. ;)

It's supposed to be in the 60's over the weekend....

There is always air conditioning GamingWeasel, not a  choice I like, but I know how heat really bothers some people. I personally love this kind of weather. Not the super high humidity that makes you melt in your tracks, but a nice hot sunny day feels good. It seems rare that we get such nice weather...but the weekend is coming & fall/winter around the corner, it will be cooler soon! :-)

No, I do not care for this weather either.  Growing up in Florida and having lived more recently in Virginia, I relish the cooler climate of Vermont.  Not really a hot summer person, I guess.  Just counting the days until Saturday and dealing with it for now.   I think the weather/guilt thing must be a northern phenomenon.  Had no such talk that I recall while growing up in Florida.

How about this angle?  Do you feel guilty about enjoying the warmer/hotter weather since it is "normally" not this hot in Vermont, on average, allegedly due to the effects of climate change, global warming, etc.  Just curious.

Not being a superstitious or religious person at all, I dont really put any stock in the, "If we have nice weather now, we'll pay for it later" type of sayings.  So that sort of thought never crosses my mind.  But sometimes I do think in winter that when I complain about it being too cold, that I'll actually miss winter when I'm later sweltering in 90 degree heat, so maybe I shouldnt be complaining. ;)

Trust me Jason, Vermont has seen hot summers  long before the climate change argument! This type of summer hasn't been around for a few years though. The last one I recall being this warm was in 1995--we had some 100 degree days in June that year, if I remember correctly.

What's different, is how cold our winters are not getting! I'm not that old, but I recall much heavier snow fall when I was a kid and far colder temps that lasted longer than they do now. December-January were generally down right frigid with a thaw coming somewhere at the end of Jan for a day or so, but then it was cold. either below zero cold or teens & 20s cold. Some winters were very snowy and some I recall rainy, which meant ice everywhere.

Now it seems like the majority of winter temps are most often in the 30s the snow comes, but doesn't stay for long before melting down. (at least in this area, I can't speak for other areas of the state) January seems to be the only month with harsh temps and it's all usually lifting by the end of March.

Of course there have always been exceptions to the above scenarios and there still are, but winter is definitely the season with the most marked change if you ask me.

I don't feel guilty about enjoying a nice summer and I don't complain about it either, since there have been plenty that were not so nice in recent years!

I started this whole thing because I thought it was interesting that people tend to feel there is a pay back for nice weather. I didn't expect the turns it took. I was thinking more along the lines of the laws of physics: In my mind it seems reasonable that the weather patterns from season to season would react to the one before it in some manner, since it's all interconnected. (I don't know if does, but assume so) A period of low precipitation would set up a period of greater precipitation (either in the form of rain or snow)--I don't have a clue if that logic really applies or not, but it seems that this would be where people got the notion about payback...;-)

Speaking of low precipitation - Has anyone noticed how low the Lamoille River is down near Steeple Market?

"how low the Lamoille River is"

I've lived on this river for over 20 years, and I'm seeing sandbars I don't remember seeing before.  Either I'm losing my memory or the water is really low.

what is that old saying about vermont, "if you don't like the weather just wait a minute and it will change."

I thought the lamoille looked pretty low the other day, but I drove up thru Montpelier last night and I couldn't believe the Winooski river between montpelier and east montpelier.  I've got family that live in Marshfield so I've been driving and fishing this section of river for years, and I don't think I've ever seen it this low!  This late summer weather is nice and all, but it puts a hurtin on the trout and other cold water fish in the rivers!

Mirjo, I took your initial question to be more of a metaphysical/philosophical one, rather than physics-related.

I've read a couple articles recently stating that this year has been the warmest year on record world-wide (average temps), since people started keeping complete records.

Mill Brook is definitely looking low.  I do all my watering by toting water by hand from it, and it's getting hard to fill up my watering can in the places I usually use.
